U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Edge Down To 222,000
(RTTNews) - First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits unexpectedly showed a modest decrease in the week ended September 3rd, according to a report released by the Labor Department on Thursday.
The report showed initial jobless claims edged down to 222,000, a decrease of 6,000 from the previous week's revised level of 228,000
Economists had expected jobless claims to inch up to 240,000 from the 232,000 originally reported for the previous week.
With the unexpected dip, jobless claims fell to their lowest level since hitting 202,000 in the week ended May 28th.

Construction spending in the U.S. unexpectedly decreased in the month of March, the Commerce Department revealed in a report released on Thursday. The Commerce Department said construction spending fell by 0.5 percent to an annual rate of $2.196 trillion in March after climbing by 0.6 percent to a revised rate of $2.207 trillion in February.

Partly reflecting a substantial increase in the South, the National Association of Realtors released a report on Wednesday showing an unexpected spike by pending home sales in the U.S. in the month of March. NAR said its pending home sales index surged by 6.1 percent to 76.5 in March after jumping by 2.1 percent to a revised to 72.1 in February.

The Commerce Department said its personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index edged down by less than a tenth of a percent in March after rising by an upwardly revised 0.4 percent in February.

U.S. GDP Unexpectedly Dips In First Quarter As Imports Soar
The Commerce Department released a report on Wednesday showing the U.S. economy unexpectedly shrank in the first quarter of 2025. The report said real gross domestic product fell by 0.3 percent in the first quarter after surging by 2.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2024. Economists had expected GDP to rise by 0.4 percent.
