U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Inch Up To 228,000
(RTTNews) - A report released by the Labor Department on Thursday showed a modest increase in first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits in the week ended October 8th.
The Labor Department said initial jobless claims rose to 228,000, an increase of 9,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 219,000. Economists had expected jobless claims to inch up to 225,000.
The report showed the less volatile four-week moving average also crept up to 211,500, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's unrevised average of 206,500.

U.S. GDP Unexpectedly Dips In First Quarter As Imports Soar
The Commerce Department released a report on Wednesday showing the U.S. economy unexpectedly shrank in the first quarter of 2025. The report said real gross domestic product fell by 0.3 percent in the first quarter after surging by 2.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2024. Economists had expected GDP to rise by 0.4 percent.

Reflecting affordability challenges associated with high mortgage rates, the National Association of Realtors released a report on Thursday showing a steep drop by U.S. existing home sales in the month of March. NAR said existing home sales plunged by 5.9 percent to an annual rate of 4.02 million in March after surging by 4.4 percent to a revised rate of 4.27 million in February.
